This unique and beautiful mushroom actually only lives for a few days at the very most.  Therefore, in order to ensure the survival of the species, it quickly produces an odiferous viscous slime from the cap, where the spores for reproduction are housed.  Ants and other insects are drawn to the mushroom by the scent and eat the “slime” and unwittingly carry the spores away to be dispersed during their travels.
