The chambered nautilus is a cephalopod that has been dubbed a “living fossil” because they have been roaming the Earth’s oceans for about 500 million years, which is hundreds of millions of years longer than the dinosaurs. They dominated the seas even before fish developed! And interestingly enough, the nautilus is also the only cephalopod animal to visibly have a shell.
