The Venetian Carnival origin dates back to 1162 when Venice's republic defeated an enemy, and people gathered on the streets to celebrate. The tradition was repeated year after year and became one of the world's most traditional Carnival celebrations. The colorful masks are a trademark of the festivity, and historically they were used to hide the face so as to protect a person’s identity and social standing.
