At the bud stage, sunflowers exhibit a unique trait called heliotropism, where the sunflower face always turns toward the sun throughout the day, starting the day facing east and ending it facing west. This helps aid in photosynthesis and in attracting pollinators. However, the heliotropism trait usually ends when the plant matures and most stand facing the east.
