Those beautiful petals aren't petals at all. They are sepals, which are leaves that protect the flower bud.  It is only after they age that they turn from green to the pigmented colors you see.   And interestingly enough, hydrangeas can "drink" through their sepals.  So, if you are looking for ways to keep your poms looking fresh and new, then just spray the colorful sepals with water a few times each day!
