Zebras are actually black with white stripes (or patches), as the white areas are caused by a lack of melanin (pigment). No two zebras have the same stripe pattern, allowing researchers and herd members to identify individuals, much like fingerprints in humans. When moving in a herd, their stripes create an optical illusion that makes it difficult for predators to focus on a single individual.
