The Bradford Pear tree, with its beautiful white blossoms, is actually a hybrid and was the result of experimentation surrounding disease resistance on the common fruiting pear tree.  It is native to China and was introduced in the US in the early 1900s, becoming a popular ornamental tree, although it quickly lost some popularity because it is prone to breakage in windy, snowy and icy conditions.
